What Happens During Lumbar Spinal Fusion?
Lumbar spinal fusion is performed under general anesthesia. The damaged disc material is removed, and any bone or tissue compressing nearby nerves is carefully cleared to relieve pressure.
Once the disc space has been prepared, a bone graft and an interbody cage are placed between the vertebrae to encourage the vertebrae to fuse. Dr. Grossman then secures the treated spinal segment with specialized instrumentation, including screws and rods, to provide immediate stability while the fusion heals. After surgery, you are monitored in the recovery area before beginning a guided rehabilitation plan to support healing and restore mobility.

PLIF accesses the spine directly through the back to remove the damaged disc and insert bone graft material and interbody cages between the vertebrae. This advanced surgical technique provides excellent visualization of the spinal canal and may be recommended for certain cases requiring extensive decompression and stabilization.
ALIF (Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion)
ALIF reaches the lumbar spine through the front of the abdomen, avoiding the back muscles altogether. This approach allows placement of a larger interbody implant, helping restore disc height and spinal alignment while stabilizing the affected vertebrae. Additional posterior instrumentation may be recommended when appropriate.
